Dental Crowns Explained
A crown is a dental restoration that is used to fix damaged or otherwise imperfect teeth. It is essentially a “cap” that covers the entire visible surface area of the affected tooth, providing it with strength, preventing further damage, and protecting it from potential infection. By restoring the tooth, we can help to prevent the need for an extraction. Crowns come available in several different materials, including metal, porcelain fused to metal, composite resin, and ceramic. At Boones Landing Dental Center, our CEREC crowns are made from ceramic. The Dental Crown Procedure
Normally, a crown takes two visits to place. During your first visit, the tooth is prepared, a process that involves removing some of the enamel from the affected tooth. This ensures that the crown fits properly in place. After the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and sent off to a lab, where your crown is designed and created. It often takes close to two weeks for the crown to be completed, so a temporary crown is provided in the meantime. When it is ready, you return for a second visit and the crown is placed. The CEREC Dental Crown Procedure
Thanks to our in-office CEREC technology, we can provide you with crowns in a single visit, eliminating the need for a temporary crown or a second visit. CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramics, utilizes CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology to create your custom crown while you wait. Your tooth still needs to be prepared, but rather than taking an impression with putty; we take a digital impression of your mouth. The image then shows up on our computer monitor. Using specialized software, we can custom design a perfectly fitting crown that will blend in seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth. Once we have finished designing your crown, the information is then sent to a milling machine, where your crown is created. Once it is finished, we are then able to cement it in place.Advantages of CEREC Same-Day Crowns
