Aspects of Restorative Dentistry

Posted on 11/16/2020 by Office - Boone DMD
Aspects of Restorative DentistryRestorative dentistry is an area of dentistry that involves replacing or repairing missing, decayed, or damaged teeth. Restorative dentistry is also known as prosthodontic dentistry, and includes elements of other specialties such as periodontics (which focuses on the gums), endodontics (which focuses on the tooth pulp and roots), and even cosmetic dentistry.

Why is Restorative Dentistry Important?

Your teeth are responsible for more than just a beautiful smile; they are also integral in chewing, eating, speaking, and maintaining your facial structure. If you are missing one or more teeth, your remaining teeth begin to gradually shift position in your mouth, leading to a misaligned bite, uneven pressure on your jaw, jawbone deterioration, and even facial collapse over time. The gaps where you are missing teeth are also highly vulnerable to plaque and bacteria buildup that can cause cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. Restorative dental procedures not only give you back a healthy, natural-looking smile, but they also restore the full function of your teeth and prevent further consequences to your oral and overall health.

Restorative dentistry is not just for people with missing teeth, however. We also use restorative procedures to treat patients with gum disease, cavities, tooth decay, chipped or cracked teeth, and a variety of cosmetic concerns.

Examples of Restorative Dental Procedures

Restorative dental procedures range greatly in invasiveness and recovery time. Examples of more minor restorative procedures include treating cavities with dental fillings or bonding, or repairing part of a damaged tooth with inlays, onlays, veneers, or crowns. On the more invasive end of the spectrum are procedures used to entirely replace damaged or missing teeth, such as the placement of dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Patients with gum disease might also undergo restorative procedures, such as having a crown placed after a root canal. If you have one or more missing, worn down, decayed, or otherwise damaged teeth, call our office today to set up a consultation.
