What Does Preventive Dentistry Include?

A dentist showing a patient his dental x ray.A trip to the dentist isn't something that you just do when you have a problem. Preventive dentistry is an important way to keep your teeth clean and healthy, allowing you to potentially avoid expensive treatments in the future.

There are a variety of aspects to preventive dentistry that will work to keep your teeth healthy:

•  X-rays. Routine X-rays are used to detect bone loss, tooth decay, infections, and cysts, as these issues won't be noticeable with a visual exam alone.
•  Dental hygiene. You'll need to practice preventive dentistry on your own by brushing and flossing in order to keep tartar and plaque away, and as part of your routine dental exam, your dental hygienist will also carefully clean all surfaces of your teeth.
•  Nutrition counseling. Your dentist will examine your teeth and may recommend dietary changes, such as cutting out sugary foods or soft drinks from your diet. If you do decide to consume these foods, your dentist will give you tips on how to best protect your teeth so that you can minimize the potential for damage.
•  Sealants. Dental sealants are often used on the teeth of children, and they involve plastic coatings applied over the teeth in order to prevent decay.
•  Habit cessation. Bad habits can be corrected with the help of your dentist, as he can recommend dental appliances or mouth guards to help with issues like tooth grinding. If evidence is appearing that you have other bad habits, such as smoking, you'll also receive counseling on the importance of ceasing these habits.
•  Oral cancer screenings. Your dentist will provide regular oral cancer screenings - as early diagnosis will give you the best chance of survival.
