Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation Effects on Oral Health

Posted on 2/2/2024 by Weo Admin
Close up of a beautiful smileYou may have read somewhere about the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the human body. The information that is commonly available about ultraviolet radiation is how it is harmful to the human skin. Some people have been told to keep their mouths shut while sunbathing. Like these people, you may be unaware that the same ultraviolet lights can cause as much harm to your oral health.

Oral Benefits of the Sun

If you get exposed to the sun for a considerable amount of time, you will absorb enough Vitamin D, which is necessary for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist will always insist that you take foods rich in calcium, but you need Vitamin D for that calcium to get absorbed into the body properly. Therefore, sun exposure is good for oral health and your health in general.

The Side Effects of Too Much Sun on Your Oral Health

Sometimes, we find ourselves exposed to the sun for longer periods than we would like. Too much sun can burn your skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Apart from too much sun affecting your skin, your oral health is also at risk. For example, UV rays can damage cells around the teeth and the gums to the roof of the mouth.

Where Can You Get Exposed to Ultraviolet Radiation?

As mentioned earlier, the sun is the primary source of ultraviolet radiation. But staying indoors does not guarantee your safety from the UV rays of the sun. If you stay close to a window, UV radiation comes indoors. You will not get a sunburn indoors, but at least 50 percent of the UV radiation penetrates through the glass. We also come into contact with UV radiation when participating in outdoor winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding. The snow reflects the rays of the sun, and it poses a significant risk to your oral health if you do not have protective gear. Ensure that you use sunscreen if you are going outdoors to protect yourself from damaging UV rays.
