How to Treat Bleeding Gums

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Office - Boone DMD
How to Treat Bleeding GumsBleeding gums can be worrisome as well as painful. Moreover, they can be caused by various factors, some which need to be professionally addressed right away and some which can be remedied by yourself at home. Here are some ways to treat bleeding gums.

Maintain Good Dental Habits

Bleeding gums are an indication of poor oral hygiene. Gums usually tend to bleed when there is a lot of plaque build up, which is causing tooth decay or a gum infection. Therefore, the best way to treat as well as prevent bleeding gums is to maintain good dental habits.

This includes brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, rinsing your mouth with a mouthwash, avoiding sugary candies and beverages, etc.

Change Your Toothbrush

Gums also tend to bleed when you brush your teeth too vigorously or use one with very hard bristles. Therefore, you should switch to a toothbrush with softer bristles and brush your teeth more gently to avoid irritating your gums.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is dangerous and harmful for your health in many ways and this includes your gums. Along with staining your teeth and causing plaque, smoking often causes gum diseases that leads to bleeding gums. So, consider quitting smoking for your gums as well as your overall health.

Work on Your Mental Health

Bleeding gums have also been found to be associated with high levels of stress. The stress can directly affect your immune system which is then unable to fight off bacteria attacking your gums. So, consider going to a therapist or practicing meditation to help relieve your stress.

Change Your Diet

Changing your diet can also help strengthen your gums and improve the overall health of your teeth, which helps stop and prevent bleeding gums. Increase intake of vitamin C and K in your diet. Drink more green tea and cut down on the carbs.
