Stopping Bleeding Following an Oral Trauma

When facing an oral trauma, there is often a lot of panic that goes with it. That panic can make it to where you aren't thinking clearly immediately. The sight of blood may be too much for some, making the situation worse.

If you are prone to accidents, it is important that you know how to stop yourself from bleeding. Here are a few things to know about stopping bleeding after facing any type of oral trauma.

Use Clean Materials to Help Stop the Bleeding

The first thing you need to do is grab something soft and clean. Put that item on the area that is bleeding, and put pressure on it. The more pressure you are able to consistently put on it, the sooner the bleeding should stop.

Don't hurt yourself worse by applying too much pressure, but instead, use a consistent, firm pressure that you can continue to hold for about 20-30 minutes. Make sure the material you use is clean so you do not introduce any bacteria into the wound. As the material gets soaked with blood, change it out for a new one.

Keep the Area Covered While Going to Get Seen
You need to go in and either see your dentist or your doctor following any type of oral trauma. They can look at your mouth and let you know if everything is alright. Perhaps you will need stitches, but that won't be known until you are seen. However, they can also give you antibiotics, which you need to make sure you won't get an infection.

If you have any type of oral trauma, don't decide that you can take it on yourself. Stop the bleeding, but make sure that you get a professional to look at the injury. That way, you can get whatever you need done, to help it heal properly.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about any oral trauma you have received!
